Grooming Your Dog According To Coat

Contrary to what high-end pet salons might tell you, grooming your dog is not exactly a luxurious treatment. It is more of a necessity that doesn’t have to break your bank. So, if you are tired to constantly having to shell out the big bucks for a professional groomer to give your dog a bath and a trim, you can choose to do it at home.

However, one thing that you need to remember is that a dog’s grooming needs vary according to the coat type. So, here are six dog coat types and the ways to groom them:

1. Double coat:

Double coated dog breeds like the Akita and Siberian Husky have two layers- one short layer for insulation and a longer layer that works as a shield against dirt and repels water. Because of the two layers, such dogs need a little more TLC than other breeds. You will need a pin brush to brush the undercoat, without which the coat will tangle and form mats. For the longer hair, divide it into sections and brush away from the skin, working your way from head to tail. Looking for something that dorks even better?  Check out the dog blowers.  Blow out dead hair, dirt and dander without even touching the dog's coat.

2. Smooth coat:

Smooth coats are short and do not shed easily, as seen in breeds like Beagle and Dalmatian. Bath the dog once every two or three months with warm water and shampoo. Towel dry the coat and then use a dryer set at high speed. You can use your hands or a bristle brush to brush the coat while drying it.

3. Curly coat:

Dogs like Poodle and Irish Water Spaniel have curly coats which can easily tangled if not groomed properly. Trim the hair once a month or two. The ideal length should be two inches. However, you need to remove dead fur before trimming, using a wide toothed comb. Give it a bath after the trim and finally towel dry.

4. Wiry coat:

Like curly coats, even wiry coats are prone to getting tangled. When grooming, you need a stripping comb as well as a slicker brush. Use the stripping comb to reduce the volume of fur and then brush that fur out using the slicker brush. Some examples of breeds with wiry coats are Fox terriers and Dachshunds.

5. Long coat:

Dogs like Shih Tzus and Yorkshire Terriers need to be brushed every day, more during shedding season. Before bathing the dog, brush its coat with a brush that has soft bristles. For best results, use a detangling shampoo or conditioner to prevent the occurrence of tangles and matting and keep the direction of the water downwards. Using your hand, comb through the hair when you shampoo. Finally, towel dry, followed up by a blow dry.

6. Hairless coat:

You may think that a hairless dog like the Peruvian Inca Orchid does not need any grooming because it is, well, hairless. However, that is not true. It may not need brushing but a good bath is a must. Use a gentle shampoo and a soft brush or sponge to scrub the body. Do not forget to rinse properly. Breeds like the Chinese Crested dog have some hair on their head, legs and tail, which needs to be washed and brushed like the regular hairy breeds. You should also apply a mild sun block on a hairless dog when going out.
To give your dog the grooming it deserves, you will need to buy the best dog products, including the best dog grooming dryers and blowers.
